Dalian University of Technology was founded in April 1949 as College of Engineering, Dalian University; in July 1950, College of Engineering gained independence from Dalian University as Dalian College of Engineering; and in March 1988, it was renamed Dalian University of Technology. During the early days of the university, the library was located at the Yi’erjiu Street campus, with an area of about 1,000 m2 and a collection of about 10,000 volumes. Later, the main campus was moved to Lingshui, and a library temporarily was set up in the First Teaching Building. In 1963, a standalone building of 8,370 m2 was built in the west wing of the Administrative Building on the main campus.
At present, the Library of Dalian University of Technology consists of one main library and three branches in five buildings, with a total construction area of 83,000 m2. The main library is located in two buildings on the main campus, namely, Bochuan Library and Lingxi Library, and the three branches are the Library of the Development Zone Campus, the Library of the Panjin Campus, and Marxism Archive.
As an integral part of the Library of Dalian University of Technology, the Library of Panjin Campus serves as a comprehensive documentation and information center that combines borrowing, reading, storage, and exhibition functionalities. The library embodies the concept of a "tower of knowledge" and underscores the notion that books are the "ladder of human progress" through its distinctive postmodern architectural design. Covering an area of 16,091 square meters and spanning four floors, the Library of Panjin Campus boasts over 1,500 reading seats and is designed to house 800,000 volumes. It officially opened in 2013 and currently holds 300,000-odd volumes of physical books in Chinese or foreign languages. It shares resources with its parent library, which possesses more than 3.87 million volumes of physical books, 254 databases, 1.86 million e-books, and 63,700 e-journals in Chinese or foreign languages.
The Library of Panjin Campus features spaces for smart seminars, cultural displays, and lectures. It is equipped with an RFID self-service kiosk system, an information dissemination system, and audio-visual reading pods, among other intelligent devices. It also uses the same service management system as its parent library, providing the Panjin Campus community with a wide array of services including book borrowing, digital resource access, lectures and training sessions, reader workshops, inter-campus borrowing and returns, literature searches, and document delivery. We uphold the campus's mission of "nurturing talent, advancing research, and preserving cultural heritage" while embodying a "reader-first" philosophy. As it carries out its core responsibilities, the library is also focusing on cultivating distinctive capabilities. By curating unique literature and information resources and constantly improving the professional skills and managerial expertise of its staff, the library aims to establish itself as a hub of research, service excellence, and innovation.
