Roel Prins
Roel Prins obtained his PhD in physical chemistry at the University of Amsterdam in 1967. From 1966 till 1977 he worked at the Shell laboratories in Amsterdam and Emeryville, USA. From 1977 till 1987 he was professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Technology in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and spent a sabbatical year in Berkeley, USA, in the group of Professor G.A. Somorjai. From 1987 till his retirement in 2006 he was professor of Catalysis at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 2006 he is guest professor at the Dalian University of Technology in China. He consults for the Petrochemical Research Institute of Petrochina in Beijing.He is corresponding member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and was president of the Federation of European Catalysis Societies (2005-2009). At the ETH he has served as chairman of the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering, as dean of the Department of Chemistry and as a member of the ETH Research Committee. He chaired the Dutch synchrotron radiation committee (1982-1986), was a member of the Swiss-Norwegian synchrotron radiation committee (1992-1998) and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Swiss Light Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland (2003-2007).
He is editor of the Journal of Catalysis, responsible for Asia. He was Schuit lecturer at the UniversityofDelaware,USA(1994), Ipatieff lecturer atNorthwestern University,USA(1999), guest professor at theTechnicalUniversityinDelft(1994) and thePierreetMarieCurieUniversityinParis(2001). In 2009 he received the Distinguished Research Award of the Division of Petroleum Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.
He is member of the International Advisory Committee of the State Key Laboratory for Catalysis of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, member of the Advisory Board Science and Technology of the National Institute of Clean and low Carbon Energy in Beijing and president of the International Advisory Committee of the Fine Chemicals Laboratory at the Dalian University of Technology.
