导论课摘要:

Virtual testing of new design ideas is now a routine practice in industry. Variational principles are a set of powerful mathematical tools that is the foundation of modern computer modelling. This talk tells the story of its development starting from Leonard Euler (1707-1783), then by Profs Qian Lingxi and Tang Limin at DUT in the early 80s, and up to the recent work at the University of Leicester. The talk will also look for inspirations from the development of modern art, such as paintings by van Gogh, to explore how future research may look like in engineering modelling.

主讲人简介:

Jingzhe Pan received his BSc in Applied Mechanics from Shenyang University of Technology in 1982, MSc in Computational Mechanics from Dalian University of Technology in 1985 and PhD in Mechanics of Composite Materials from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in 1988. From 1991 to 1994, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Engineering Department of Cambridge University, working on creep failure of engineering materials. From 1994 to 2006, he was a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and then Reader at the University of Surrey. His research at Surrey was focused on sintering science and technology. In 2006, he joined the University of Leicester to take up a Chair in Mechanics of Materials.

Prof Jingzhe Pan is internationally renowned for his work on sintering science and degradation theory of biomaterials. In 2018 he was awarded the Verulam Medal and Prize in recognition of his distinguished contributions to ceramics by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining IoM3.

Prof Jingzhe Pan is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. He lectures Solid Mechanics at level one and Advanced Finite Element Analysis at level four and postgraduate. His lectures cover mechanics of engineering structures, energy methods and variational principles, constitutive laws (such as plasticity and creep) of engineering materials, advanced topics and case studies of finite element analysis.

Prof Jingzhe Pan is the Deputy Head of Department of Engineering, and the Head of Mechanics of Materials Research Group (MoM). The MoM group was established by Frederick Leckie in 1968. It currently has 18 academic staff (including 3 Professors), 7 support staff and over 30 PDRAs and PhD students. From 2011 to 2015 Prof Pan was the Director of Research for the College of Science and Engineering, which consists of seven Departments.
