报告题目:Monolayer-based Materials for the Study the Structure and Interactions of Proteins with Surfaces
报告人:Prof. Andreas Terfort
邀请人:刘进轩 教授

报告人简介:Prof. Dr. Andreas Terfort holds a Chair at the Goethe-University of Frankfurt, Germany. His group is specialized in surface chemistry with a strong focus on bio-interactions and sensor development. He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, holds several patents and is a frequently invited speaker at international conferences.
报告内容简介:Due to the necessity of compartmentalization (e.g. formation of cell membranes), biology on the molecular level is dominated by interaction with interfaces. Biologically important events such as cell-cell adhesion or infection typically start by directed and selective interactions.
In this talk, I will present the application of self-assembled monolayers as models for such biological interfaces. Starting off with suppressing unspecific interactions, attaining specific interactions and finally lifting the modified materials off to result in ultrathin materials opens opportunities to learn more about the interactions in different areas of molecular biology. Using the monolayers to model glycocalyxes, the highly glycosylated layers surrounding most eukaryotic cells, we try to understand better the mechanisms of cell-cell recognition but also to build new sensors. As the model systems can be mechanically stabilized by crosslinking, I will finally demonstrate that the recognition in combination with cryo-transmission electron microscopy can also be used for the determination of the structures membrane proteins, which are notoriously difficult to characterize.
